Harmonic, Melodic, and Functional Automatic Analysis

This work is an effort towards the development of a system for the automation of traditional harmonic analysis of polyphonic scores in symbolic format. A number of stages have been designed in this procedure: melodic analysis of harmonic and non-harmonic tones, vertical harmonic analysis, tonality, and tonal functions. All these informations are represented as a weighted directed acyclic graph....

The Geometry of Melodic, Harmonic, and Metrical Hierarchy

Music is hierarchically structured in numerous ways, and all of these forms of organization share essential mathematical features. A geometrical construct called the Stasheff polytope or associahedron summarizes these similarities. The Stasheff polytope has a robust mathematical literature behind it demonstrating its wealth of mathematical structure. By recognizing hierarchies that arise in mus...

Lexicalization in Signed Languages: When is an Idiom not an Idiom?

The internal and often iconic structure of the signs in a signed language (SL)—the rough equivalent of words in spoken languages—present interesting challenges for linguistic theory. Specifically, lexicalisation in SLs occurs when a signed unit acquires a clearly identifiable and replicable citation form which is regularly and strongly associated with a meaning. The meaning is unpredictable and...

Construction of an Idiom Corpus and its Application to Idiom Identification based on WSD Incorporating Idiom-Specific Features

Some phrases can be interpreted either idiomatically (figuratively) or literally in context, and the precise identification of idioms is indispensable for full-fledged natural language processing (NLP). To this end, we have constructed an idiom corpus for Japanese. This paper reports on the corpus and the results of an idiom identification experiment using the corpus. The corpus targets 146 amb...

An Aspect for Idiom-based Exception Handling

The last couple of years, various idioms used in the 15 MLOC C code base of ASML, the world’s biggest lithography machine manufacturer, have been unmasked as crosscutting concerns. However, finding a scalable aspect-based implementation for them did not succeed thusfar, prohibiting sufficient separation of concerns and introducing possibly dangerous programming mistakes. This paper proposes a c...
